No, They ARE NOT Homeless, But They do Have Pretty Convincing Outfits Sometimes

For several years now, my daughters have hated going shopping. Really, they can't stand it. I think the problem is two-fold. First of all, as you might already know. I HATE SHOPPING. Seriously. There is nothing appealing to me about walking around for hours just to see if there might possibly be something that I maybe want to own. Who does that?

The other problem might have something to do with the wacky body shape they inherited from me. Big busted, tiny waisted and very short.

If you didn't know better, you might think that was a good thing.

But if you've ever tried to shop for modest clothing with those proportions, you know that it's incredibly difficult.

Have you ever tried to find a T-shirt that was high necked and small waisted, and still leaves plenty of room for boobs and hips? I'm telling you it can't be done. Shade, Down East, Divine Modest-Tee, ModBe, we've tried them all. They suck.

Usually we settle for something that's semi-tight in the bust region, and very baggy around the waist, making them look somewhat like a box. A very short box.

And swimsuit shopping is nigh impossible. This year we finally settled for some suits from Modbe, which on normal people would be actually modest, but on my daughters? They are just the least non-modest swimsuits we could find. (don't tell me about surfer tops, it's a whole 'nother problem - mkay?)

You might be wondering why all this is boiling over today. Well... the Sadie Hawkins dance is this weekend, and somebody around here really needs a new outfit, but I've been met with actual mutiny. Orr..... it's entirely possible that it's me who's mutinizing. Those things get a little muddled, don't they?

Wish me luck, say a prayer, and if you want to bring me some chocolate cake, that might be good, too.

(OK, I just re-read this and it sounds a little whiny. Sorry about that. Just one of those days, I guess.)

I found your blog through a comment you made on "light Refreshments" and laughed so hard I had to find you.

Anyway, I have two teenage daughters and totally commiserate with you on the shopping dilema!

As one who struggles with a long wasit, tall shape, big hips and a very large bottom, and can never find clothing to cover up, I feel your pain....these are the times when I wish I knew how to sew or alter clothing. Good luck with the dance outfits...

I was with you at the beginning. My mom tells me I've always been a perfect 8 (when it comes to sewing bridesmaid dresses, etc.) But I had to tell her that I think now I'm a perfect 10. High score!! Oh yeah, my point was, I still hate to shop.

Shopping for clothes sucks. I don't think it's easy to find modest clothing anymore period. If my MIL weren't such a fashion conscious shopper, my oldest would insist on being homeschooled. I wish you and your girls luck.

You could always just eat, eat, eat until your waist is large too. That way you WOULD be a box and everything would fit perfectly. Right?

Um, I do. Ok, I don't walk around for hours; I DO shop with a purpose. But, if I have little success, I feel like slitting my wrists. I've gotten to a place now where I have my favorite stores because I know their stuff will most likely fit me. I just keep to those places.

Good luck. Finding just the right thing is so difficult.

I can't believe it! This is the exact problem my daughters have. My oldest daughter wears a size 4 jeans and a 32DDD bra. Do you realize that NO ONE makes a 32 triple D bra? Even special orders only have 34s with that cup size. It is a nightmare. I truly sympathize.

Ok- I love shopping, especially for other people! It is one of my favorite things to do- so fly me up, and I will take everyone shopping!

What a pain in the patootie.

Good luck. It's hard enough to find cute modest clothing without the wacky body proportions.

However, I see a money making opportunity in your future...

As you know I love shopping BUT my Fashionista has the hardest time finding modest clothes. Like your girls, she has good sized chest, which she didn't get from me. At all.
Swimsuits are the worst.

Anyway, may the Modest Fairies smile upon you and grant you good fittings.

Props to you and your girls for still striving for the modest stuff!
Good luck---and I hope you end up enjoying the process of getting a new outfit:)

I HATE shopping too!!! Not only because I just find it incredibly boring, and way too much work to try on clothes, but because I have the same body shape problem (though my waist isn't tiny- my hips are). Bra shopping is the worst!!!

At long last I finally resorted to the old adage, "if you've got it flaunt it." Although I am still modest, I don't let it stress me out if some cleavage is showing. I just can't help it.

And as far as the bathing suits go, I have to admit to buying a two piece. Although the largest top is still a bit small, it was much easier to find a suit that fit this way than to try on a million one-piece suits that I knew would never fit. And I know the issues with the tankinis, too!

Amy Peterson - I would LOVE to have a personal shopper.

I keep asking goddessdivine to be my personal shopper but she likes shopping for herself too much to bother getting stuff for me, too.

I hope it turns out to be a good experience FOR EVERYONE. I LOVE shopping--window shopping that is ; )

See, and I have the opposite problem: Tiny boobs and a big waist. I think I'd rather have her struggles...

That stinks. You need to find someone willing to sew dresses for your girls.

That won't solve the problem of every-day clothes, but at least it'll make the special occasions memorable for a good reason, and not b/c of a wardrobe malfuntion in mid-boogie.

taturner--perhaps we could work something out with some sort of monetary donation. It's not like I don't want to be your personal shopper; I need to make it worth my while.

Wow, sounds like my body type. Except for the not-so-small waist as of late. Good luck shopping... maybe we should start a support group?

So sorry. That truly sucks. Especially with a deadline looming on the horizon.

Whiny is ok. I can be whiny too.

Good luck with that shopping thing. I ALWAYS prefer to leave the daughter at home. That way I can buy her what I want without her two cents. Much pleasanter.

Until I get home, anyway!

I don't think you sound whiny, just exasperated with the clothing industry. You'd think they'd have figured out by now that we come in all shapes and sizes...

I hope that you have a successful shopping trip-- and stop for chocolate cake when you are done! ;-)

I was a shopper girl when in my teens, but now...I like to let my fingers do the shopping. Click. Click. Click. And it comes right to your door!

Of course I suppose that doesn't help in the proportion department.

TheOneTrueSue said...

I was cursed with the same shape. It bothered me so I just ate a whole lot so that I could be more of a circle. Totally solved the problem. Now I just wear tents.

Randi, I'm petite and small busted. Nothing fits properly unless I shop in the childrens' section. So I'm with you on the woes of shopping when you don't look like the model they patterned all clothes on. I sincerely wish you luck on finding the right outfit for your girl.

I don't like shopping either.

The thing that is the most painful is taking my 13 year old son shopping for clothes.
I'm not sure which one of us is more miserable.
Probably him, because I insist on looking at the tag on the back of his pants to determine what size to have him try on.

Apparently, that's the most humiliating thing I've ever put him through.

Good luck, best wishes and some of this

I used to hate shopping too. My body shape is weird. I am flat chested, tiny waisted and huge hips. What the heck?!

I'd be whining too if I was faced with your shopping dilemma! :0
