Because they had our Relief Society doing this project a few years ago, and I was totally into it until I realized a machine would be heaps faster than my little crochet hook, and asked why handmade was better. The answer I got was that the oil from our hands helps heal the sores, and I'm pretty sure that's complete bologna, to put it nicely.
