I Would Make a Horrible Momma Bird

Last weekend we had the experience of visiting our 2 older kids in their respective colleges. I was surprised at how emotional it was for me.

And I'll tell you, I just don't know how momma birds do it. There's a little panicky part of me that feels like my baby birds have moved out of the nest, and are perched on the ledge of the 37th floor, beginning their warm-up flapping.

The kids are both great and they are going to be just fine. And as they begin to spread their wings a little, I'll be trying not to yell -
"Wait! Come back where I can protect you!"
Because in my head, I know that it's really time. I mean, seriously, do I really want a bunch of fat birds waddling through my basement playing videogames for the rest of their lives? No. I know that they both have goals and dreams, and they will find a way to fly. Not just where the wind takes them, but where they want to go.

And this time, my head is going to have to overrule my heart. (the part yelling "wait, come back!")

I'll be looking forward to seeing them soar, seeing what kind of birds they decide to be, and where they build their own nests. And I'll be here chirping for them as loud as I can.

Well, my six year old told me she's going to live at home FOREVER, even after she's married, so I guess I will never have to face that reality. Ha.

You sound like a really good mom.

That day seems so far away, and so close all in one moment.

I never thought I'd get used to idea with my eldest, but I did and life is good. However now the baby is on the verge of flight school and I don't think I like it. Empty nest? I don't even no what to say.............

You have kids in college??? You don't look old enough.

Letting them fly from home is such an emotional thing. But empty nest time is really lovely.

I wish we were in the same ward and you could be my Mom-mentor and help me through all the crazy phases of motherhood. I've only got 1 right now, and she's 6 months old and I'm already stressed about every little thing. It's gonna be a loooooong couple decades. . .

Miggy- Me too!! I would love that. The younger moms in my ward don't really care to socialize with the um, more mature moms. I don't know how much help I'd be, but we could laugh a LOT!
MG and Q - I'm glad to know that someday I'll get used to it, and maybe even like it!
