I actually know a store that does use both paper and plastic for every bag of groceries you buy, and there's a reason why everything in that store (Albertsons!) is so expensive!
I would have to say my mess fabric "Green" bags are my favorite thing in the world! Not only am I "saving the planet" (I won't tell you about all the disposable diapers) but they actually carry way more stuff! So less time carrying groceries!
I'm slowly starting to buy a fabric bag here and there because my grocery store's plastic bags are so flimsy and they break at exactly the wrong time. They offer paper, but no handles of course. I don't like having to remember the fabric bags, but I do think I can carry more without cans and fruit dropping all over the pavement. It is irritating how the environmentalists get so preachy though.
I have Green Bags, which I'm quite fond of (so roomy! So indestructable!) But I always forget them. My store puts reminders on the entrance too. Like I'm going to turn around and walk back out to the car! How about putting big reminders in front of every parking place?
I NEED plastic bags! I use them for garbage liners in my bathrooms. We send things to school in them. I pack my breakables in them every time we move... (remember, we've moved 13 times in the last 10.5 years...)
I'm with melissa - I reuse the plastic bags as garbage can liners, etc., and I use the paper bags to hold my newspapers and other paper recycling until it's time to haul it to the garage.
And I second that "annoying preachy environmentalists" nomination.
I like my green bags because they hold more and my store gives me money back every time I bring them in. I like to put them back in my car after every grocery trip. Oh, and I am definetely not into all that enviornmentalist stuff, they are so annoying and I hate that they put trees, fish, plants, etc before the welfare of people.
I love my reusable Target bag because I can throw diapers in the bottom and pile stuff on it at the store and have less to carry. BUT, I sure don't like anyone telling me HOW to be responsible. Pushing any kind of views on anyone just totally bugs. It does make you want to rebel. Which makes me think of teens. Hmmm. I wonder if I'll ever say "it's the responsible thing to do!" to my boys. Uh oh...
I'm all for earth hugging and all that crap. But seriously, I'm dragging 4 young kids in and out of the grocery store, I'm SO not taking my own bags with me. But we recycle, so that totally cancels out the use of plastic bags, right? Plus, GEEEEZ, don't tell me what to do - rude sign making people... Next time you go to the store, make sure and buy everything that has styrofoam or other nasty land-filling items. That will show them.
Ok, I am right there with you. I love, LOVE my plastic grocery bags. I know they are not far from being banned in Santa Fe, because Santa Fe likes to do whatever San Fransisco does. I will cry sad, salty tears on that day, and join the protesters on the main drag in town to protest. I'll get them back though, and use disposable diapers when the baby is born!! Mwwwaaahah! Take that landfill!

I object to being admonished to buy my own shopping bags which will ultimately save the company money after I have to unload my goods, check myself out, bag my purchase with two (baby and toddler) kids in tow and reload the cart because the checkers they hire are always complaining about someone in another department making more work for them by not marking something correctly (heaven forbid they have to punch up a few numbers manually), never look me in the eye when they mutter an inaudible greeting (which is more often a grunt) all the while carrying on a conversation with their cronies three lanes up. Self check out stinks but it's often better than the alternative. I'm not hauling a dozen or more reusable bags to make an already inconvenient trip, void of customer service, more of a hassle.
(That's the longest of run-on sentences ever but dang do I feel better!)

Reminds me of the time my roommate made signs for our apartment building's laundry room, saying "Keep the Sabbath Day holy and do your laundry on Saturday."
I can't stand tree huggin' greenies who are so self-righteous that they feel the need to guilt trip everyone else into their lunacy. Don't get me wrong,I love this planet, but I don't need anyone TELLING me to recycle.
Have you been to the Sunflower Market? They actually have signs reseving parking for "fuel efficient cars" and other such nonsense! Shouldnt' they just be happy I came to their store to shop?

I bought the bags months ago and I haven't used them once- I keep forgetting.
Ikea actually charges you to use their bags- it's completely annoying.
