Conference Contest!!

Every 6 months, the LDS church holds a worldwide conference. Instead of attending our regular church services on this weekend, we're invited to listen to the living prophet and the apostles of the church give direction via satellite broadcast.

It's always uplifting, and never fails to inspire me to do better. I also find that when I listen to these people speak with my heart open it's as if they are talking just to me. I hear answers to my problems, and find comfort in their stories and examples.

In short, it's several hours of time that really rest my soul, and then strengthen it.

Anyway, I'm always looking for The Quote. If you're a regular listener, you know what I mean. Usually there are one or two particular gems that are meaningful enough to speak to your heart, and concise enough that you could print it up in vinyl lettering and put it in a little niche of a wall somewhere that you will see it often.

So ...the contest is to help me find The Quote.

Just come back Saturday or Sunday - or both, and tell me what your favorite quotes are so far.

The first person to enter the winning quote will get a lovely gift box full of

Not just regular prizes, either. We're talking FABULOUS. (Which I would do all glittery again, but I don't think I can.)

Sessions can be internet streamed here:

Saturday and Sunday, October 4-5, 2008
10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. MDT both days, and each lasts about 2 hours. Hopefully you can catch at least an hour here or there.

Previous winning quotes:

"You reach the greatest heights while on your knees."

“There is no one perfect way to be a good mother.”

"No success can compensate for failure in the home."

and my personal favorite:

"No misfortune is so bad that whining about it won't make it worse."

What have been some of your other past favorites?

k, count me in! I am always ready... Do we have to get the quote verbatim? Or the general idea until the Ensign comes out?

Weeeelll, let's just say --- pretty darn close.

Since it's supposed to be a relatively short quote, that shouldn't be too hard, right?

I already have one from the General Women's Meeting. That should count, right?? It might be too long for this competition, but I LOVED this quote from Elder Uchdorf: "The number of prayers we say may contribute to our happiness, but the number of prayers we answer may be of even greater importance."

Some of my favorites: "We have chosen not to be ordinary." "None can permanently endure on borrowed light." "Give when needed, not when it is convenient." "Just because something is good does not mean it is worth our time." "Some people are amusing themselves to death . . .spiritual death." "You cannot be released as parents." "Enjoy the doing a little more and worry less about the getting it done."

I am a quote freak, so this is right up my alley.

Dangit. You just had to put in prizes. This is totally going to screw up my tradition of having a nap Sunday morning session.

I'm new here....love the contest. I'll be back for sure. I've derived my own quote from Elder Uchtdorf's talk. He said to take a space and beautify it. My quote is, "It's not cleaning, it's beautifying."

Can I join? If so count me in. I got my note pad and pen ready :-)

Well, these quotes weren't given in Conference... but since this isn't the contest yet, I'll share. Pres Hinckley and Pres Monson both visited Ricks (yes it was still Ricks) while I was there. Not at the same time... but that's not the point. Pres Hinckley said, "You're not much to look at, but you're all the Lord's got. So get to work!" Loved it! And Pres Monson said (speaking of his wife) "I knew I had found the one. The rocks in her head matched the holes in mine!" It may have been reversed (he had the rocks... anyway) but I laughed so hard. Gotta love those General Authorities :)

Oooh, what a good idea! My favorite Pres. Hinckley quote is the story he tells about when he's a new missionary and he's getting homesick. His father writes back and says,

"Forget yourself and go to work."

Great wisdom. I'll be back with more on Saturday!

Count me in! This is one of my faves from last GC. "In God’s eternal plan, salvation is an individual matter; exaltation is a family matter." Russel M. Nelson, Saturday a.m. session.

oooo randi, i know what you mean. like "tender mercies of the Lord" by elder david a. bednar from apr 2005 conference. i do something like this when i go to regular sundays, too.

i look for "the moment" that feels like THE REASON i was supposed to be in church that day. it is the best moment that just gets to me, melts my heart, goosebumps, something. i know the moment when it happens.

cool idea. glad to be going away camping but also would like to hear conference first hand. but i will get to later.

enjoy, kathleen

I love the simplicity of Spencer W Kimball's "Just Do It!" We spend so much time talking about the principles, just do it.

Oaks' talk "Good Better & Best"

"We should begin by recognizing the reality that just because something is good is not a sufficient reason for doing it."

It (quite literally) changed my life, and was the impetus to my mastering the art of saying No with grace, style and no guilt.

great idea -- I'll be back!

Okay, I echo the one from the General RS broadcast from Elder Uchtdorf! But since that's already taken now, I'll add this from Elder Wirthlin: "Sometimes the very moments that seem to overcome us with suffering are those that will ultimately suffer us to overcome." I also loved Elder Holland's line about angels "Seen or unseen, they are always near" and Not all angels are from the other side of the veil. Some of them we walk with, talk with. Some of them are in our very own neighborhoods, some of them gave birth to us. One of them even consented to marry me! These are people so good and so pure that angelic is the only word that comes to mind."

Here are a few more from this morning's session: President Eyring: "Pride is the great enemy of unity."
and "Differences can be seen as contributions rather than irritations."

And Pres. Monson had a great rhyming one that I couldn't jot down fast enough. It was something like "Love is not known unless it is shown."

Ok - In an effort to NOT be confusing, I opened a more recent post for people to post their quotes. I just thought it would be easier if you could just use the post at the top of the page.

Sorry about that.

All these quotes will still be in the contest!! (and YAY because there are some good ones here.)

But for future quotes, we've moved to the October 4th post.

I KNOW - way to not be confusing, right?
