Movie Roulette

Well, in the blink of an eye (it was a loooong blink, ok?) we went from 76 degrees yesterday to a high of 26 today. Also we have freezing drizzle. Good thing I put off my shopping until today, isn't it?

I think I'll stay home today, make soup with whatever is in the freezer for dinner, and see if people will snuggle up with a blanket and a good movie tonight. I my daughters are staying up anyway, considering that they have Twilight tickets for 12:01 am. (I have a ticket for 10:30 tomorrow morning. Because I'm SANE like that.)

I can't decide what movie, though. Give me your best "it's-freezing-outside- doesn't-everyone-want-to-stay-home-and-watch-a-movie-with-mom" movie.

We could go classic: 7 Brides For 7 Brothers will usually get lots of takers at our house.

Romantic: Maybe Sabrina, or You've Got Mail (but in that case, we automatically lose anyone with a y chromosome. They will disappear downstairs where they will proceed to load up their Call of Duty game. At full volume.)

Family: might be a safer choice. Who could resist Finding Nemo, right?

Sci-Fi: Galaxy Quest, or maybe one of the Star Trek movies.

Horror movies are out.

Is it too early for a Christmas movie? Is it EVER too early for a Christmas movie?

Maybe we should just open the dvd case, and see what falls out onto the floor. That's a popular way to choose around here, too.

Wait! Is there a Thanksgiving movie I should know about? That would be fantastic!

I love cozy movie nights! I'm the crazy mom who volunteered to drive her daughter and friends to the midnight Twilight tonight. I think I need a nap, come to think of it.

We've already watched Elf twice, Charlie Brown Christmas at least 5 times, and Grinch twice. I vote for Elf in the Christmas category.

Not sure of your age range, but if Call of Duty is on the table then O Brother Where Art Thou is probably ok. That is probably my favorite "everyone loves it and is always a good choice" movie.

I love movie nights! I would vote for Finding Nemo - it's just too good to pass up!

I have to wait all the way until tomorrow night to see Twilight. :( I would totally go tonight at midnight if I could. I'm a little bit nervous to see it though - just the previews alone are COMPLETELY wrong. I'm going to have to come home and read the book again just to make myself feel better.

Yeah, me and Twilight aren't friends. Don't let my little picture fool you.

We've been watching Christmas movies constantly for the last two weeks or so. Grinch is popular in house.

I'd go for a christmas one.

Oh, find a Thanksgiving on, for sure.

We watched Zathura (sci-fi for kids) one night and it was almost too scary (for the six year old), and was far from perfect but it was also tons of fun.

For a Thanksgiving movie,I would go for Charlie Brown. :D

It's too hard to choose one Christmas movie...so watch two of them.

It has to be the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie with Gene Wilder. They showed that one on TV Thanksgiving evening every year when I was a kid (or so it seemed). To be it IS Thanksgiving, except for the food, which, come to think of it, is a pretty big omission.

Ahh there is this great movie you would all love! Man what is the name- it's about a guy who steals famous art, just for fun, and man- you would have to watch the edited version. Oh, if I remember the name I will let you know.

I can hardly wait to see the Twilight movie this weekend!
A movie night sounds like a lot of fun!
Journey to the Center of the Earth
August Rush
Kit Kitteridge
All great movies for young & old. Not that we're old. How about mature? No? Those with discriminating tastes. Yes.

I'm doing the 10:00AM Twilight matinee on Saturday, because I'm sane as well. Also because Husband will be able to take Baby at that time while I'm away. I love matinees.

I can never think of on-the-spot good movies, but I know there are tons I love. I'll get back to you.

I feel like watching Muppet Christmas Carol right about now...or Home Alone. Both, absolute classics.

I am insane and will be at the 12:01 showing...actually I am going straight after work to wait in line. Precious.

You have some of my favorites on that list--I love You've Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle. Galaxy Quest I watch every time it's on TBS.

I'm going to Twilight tomorrow at 12:30--just don't know what time to go to the Theatre??? (You have temps like ours--I WAS FREEZING this morning when I got to the Church. But then again, it is November 20th)

I think you need to go for a classic. Nothing newer than 3 decades and definitely black and white. And I'd go suspense. Love the old time suspense movies where there is a lot to be learned in what is not seen. My favorite of all time is Notorious with Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman. Beautiful to look at and a great story. Another great movie is called Rebecca - it stars Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine, how awesome is that? Go classic!

How did it get so cold so fast?

I say we have Father Al investigate.

Hmm. My husband and I love "Secondhand Lions." There's romance (but not too much), action, and mystery, all rolled up into one goofy movie.

In our family we always go for the old funny classics:

What's Up Doc?
Mad, Mad, World
The Russians Are Coming
Operation Petticoat
Father Goose
Who's Minding The Mint?

Personally, I'm not going to ANY of the Twilight shows in our town. Ever. Call me a rebel, whatever. I just don't have a thing for vampires.

But I DO have a thing for Cary Grant. Charade, the Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer, Bringing up Baby, Father Goose...these are family favorites at our house. Cary Grant has coined some of the original one-liners that would blow Arnold Schwarzeneggar out of the water. Like, "Mellow Greetings, Hookey Dookey", or the "You remind me of a man..." schtick.

And if you're going to watch a Christmas movie, please don't forget "Scrooge", with Albert Finney. I got this movie for my birthday a few years ago and I watch it on my birthday every year ....in July!

When I'm trying to decide movies with people this is my set-up: everyone picks 2 (or 3 depending how many people there are) movies they'd enjoy. Then, you go around, one by one, and everyone eliminates one movie at a time. Whatever movie is left in the end is the one you watch. So far it's never resulted in tears or tantrums:)

You need a beachy, sunny movie. Don't know what, but at least it'll make ya feel warm!
P.S.--26 degrees would freeze me solid, even if I stayed inside! YIKES!!
P.S.S. It's, uh, like 75 degrees here today, clear blue skies and goregous roll-down-the-van-windows weather! SORRY!!!!! =]

I'm seeing Twilight on Saturday, because I too am sane. Go us!

our family can't get enough of "Christmas Story" -- you know, the classic, 'glow of electric sex in our living room window' movie?! It's awesome!!

"A Christmas story" is great at any time of year.
My kids just watched "Home alone" a few days ago.

You can't beat "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" or "Hannah and Her Sisters" or "Pieces of April". Great films one and all.

I always thought your family did Christmas right. It was just never a great time in my family, for a bunch of reasons. I LOVED being around you all at Christmas - just a great, warm feeling.

That being said, I had never seen It's a Wonderful Life prior to watching it at your parents' house. I'm not sure why - I guess I had just never seen it on (I kid). So, while I am chiming in a bit too late for tonight's festivities, my vote is for It's a Wonderful Life.

Wednesday night Kris Face and I watched "Stardust"...I had forgotten how much I loved it the FIRST time I saw it! :)

I'll be waiting for the Twilight video. Heck we wait for the video for every movie.
I agree about no horror movies. I saw two or three when I was a kid and had chronic nightmares.
Give me Young Frankenstein anyday. That's a monster flick I can take.
