My Coffee Maker is Dying

Oh, yes, I really do.

Nobody here drinks coffee, but we all enjoy having insta-water that is the perfect temperature for herb tea or hot chocolate.

So I've had this little beauty for 5 years now, even though it started dripping water out one of the seals last year. Now it's more like a steady trickle of water every time we run it. Do you think it's a problem to run an electric appliance while it's sitting in a pool of water?
Do you think God might be getting ready to shock me for having an appliance of evil in my home? (kidding!! I'm kidding!!)

I guess maybe I'll ask for a new coffee maker for Christmas.

I would highly recommend this to all my lds friends as a low energy, highly safe way for your children to get their own hot water,(unless your coffee maker happens to be sitting in a pool like mine.), but I don't want to start any kind of trend that could be responsible for someone telling you that "especially considering your calling" you need to "avoid the appearance of evil", as some helpful person once told me.

Do you think that means I should stop taking the Laurels to Starbucks for steamed milk? Because they'd WAY rather do that than go for ice cream.

Oh well, If the bishop wants to talk to me about avoiding the appearance of coffee I'm pretty sure he has my cell phone on speed dial anyway.

Hey! FYI -- -The very best herb tea in all the world (at the bottom of this link) is making it's seasonal appearance. If you haven't gotten yours yet, I'd suggest doing it immediately. A couple of weeks ago, The Brain brought me home 6 boxes. No wonder I like him so much! He totally gets me.

You are extremely evil.

We have a kettle for tea (mostly for when Greg's parents are here, but the kids are fond of a cup of mint or raspberry tea). Ours looks like this. Not too evil, I hope. . .

I have a secret about coffee, too - I think it smells divine! Sometimes I go into Starbucks just to bask in the aroma. And I did taste it once. It's amazing to me that something that smells so good can taste so bad. :)

Your bishop probably sneaks vanilla steamers at Starbucks too.

I think you should get a new coffee maker now, and ask for something more exciting for Christmas. Just a thought. That's my motus operandi :)

I LOVE those vanilla steamers at Starbucks - I wish my YW leaders would have taken us there! I also love their Caramel Apple Cider - it's AMAZING! I'm definitely going to have to try that holiday herbal tea. It sounds awesome!

P.S. I loved all the other things on your R List. Are you going to do it again this year?

P.P.S. You need to make a button! You know, like all the other very popular and awesome bloggers have!

We have one of these: http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/186-0340897-7196144?asin=B0019FE1ZA&AFID=Nextag&LNM=B0019FE1ZA|Chefmate_Hot_Pot&ref=tgt_adv_XSN10001

(Excuse my inability to hyperlink)

Not quite as coffee maker-esque.

bleh. I can't stand tea. I've tried adding five cups of sugar, and four cups of milk, and two cups of creamer. It's gotta be thick for me to drink it. I make my hot chocolate with milk.

I like your coffee maker idea. It's a great way to get hot water.

Have you ever heard of the cocomotion? It's a nice little thing that makes the hot chocolate for you. You just put in the cold water and the hot chocolate, push a button, and in 5 minutes you have 1-5 servings of hot chocolate. I'm sure it would work for cider also. Of course, not so much for tea, with the tea bags and all.

My SIL got it for us for Christmas last year and I LOVE it.

LOL, a *coffee maker*!! You're a genius. How have I never thought of using one for such a purpose before?? I hope you can get a new working one soon. (Do they make hot enough water that you wouldn't want preschoolers to have free access to one? Just thinking ahead....)

I've never been a huge fan of drinking tea (it all tastes so watered down to me...), but with a hefty amount of honey, it's so nice! The herbal stuff really works well for remedies, too. I let my daughter pick out a holiday Celestial Seasonings tea a couple weeks ago. She picked the Sugar Plum variety. I tasted it, and it was surprisingly pleasant. I've been eying the Gingerbread Spice with curiousity ever since. I guess I'll have to try it, since it comes so highly recommended, huh?

(PS - have you tried the caramel apple ciders at Starbucks?!?)

I wonder if it's the whole "appearance of evil" thing that makes my mom get COMPLETELY up in arms about the idea of a yearly Primary Pajama Party that my ward does. Hm.

Gasp! Oh, the horror - the absolute horror! How do you sleep at night knowing that you've not been avoiding the appearance of evil?

Okay, all kidding aside, I'm not seeing why it's a problem to let your coffee maker sit in a puddle of water. Sheesh! People are so uptight.

Okay, seriously, now. Seriously. I despise tea of all kind. I think it's a curse. I have to drink hot cocoa instead, which is great taste-wise, but not so great calorie-wise.

I know, my life is hard, right?

Someone already mentioned the awesomeness that is CocoMotion. The only drawback is that you have to hand-wash it every time. Mine stays on the counter from late summer to late spring.

You are hilarious. Definitely avoid the appearance of all evil. I once took the yw (well, not officially the yw, but more of a girls outing for whomever wanted to go) to a haunted house. There was a particular parent or two who didn't think that was maybe the best idea, but then, hey, every other parent in the ward happily dropped of their daughter at my house, with lots of waves and "have fun"s.

So I'm totally on your side--I bet there'll be a great black friday deal on a brand spankin new one!

Been hinting at my hubby that I want one for the hot water thing for ages. I think I'm going to have to break down and get it myself.

How dare you ma'am.How.dare.you.

I love the Strawberry Frappucino.

Have had the conversation about the appearance of evil numerous times.

Steamed milk?

Just a tip: mug. water. MICROWAVE. Thirty seconds. No evil. Just radioactive cocoa.

Works like a charm.

I think people get all judgey when they see a coffeemaker on someone's counter (I know this through personal experience-the judgey part, not the coffeemaker part)but you have a blog to set everyone straight, so what's the prob? Oh, the pool of water, right . . .

Here in the UK we have an electric kettle - boiling water in about a minute and a half, and no silly filter thing to drop through. CHeck out "Aroma 1.5L X-Press Stainless Steel Water Kettle - AWK-115S" at Target.com. And it's very spiffy looking!

Starbucks Carmel Apple Cider is my favorite.

Really you should be avoiding the appearance of evil at ALL COSTS! I'm pretty disappointed... hee hee.

Barbaloot said...

My older brother always got SO excited to make hot chocolate in the coffee makers when we stayed in hotels! Cracks me up that you have one:)

Have you ever tried Coco-Motions? Cuz I'm pretty sure they're the best invention ever. That and the heating pad.

Fabulous tip! Thanks!

When the bishop and/or home teachers come over, just slap it with a sticker: "Hot Cocoa Maker."

YUK! tea is GRODY-to-the-MAX! I've tried it every which way, with and without everything...can't stand it.

But I hope Santa brings you a new coffee maker...and I secrety hope he brings me one, too...a great idea for hot water!! :)

If you would like, I could crochet or quilt you a lovely coffee maker cover to hide your "appliance of evil" when your visiting teachers come over.
What color is your kitchen?

Little GrumpyAngel said...

Well, maybe I should stop coming to your blog to avoid the appearance of visitng an evil blog :-) Well, I drink decaf tea doctor's recommendation for a stomach issue, and sometimes LDS friends see the box of tea bags in my pantry and go, "Oh!" :-) Nice conversation piece. I vote you get a new coffeemaker. That pool of water is more dangerous than judgemental bloggers :-)

Mrs Andy said...

You asked, "Do you think it's a problem to run an electric appliance while it's sitting in a pool of water?"

See also, the turkey baking incident of 2008, and ask yourself, can you kitchen take anymore emergencies, and will your smoke detector work? :)

I never thought of using a coffee maker for hot water...that's a really good idea.

The only tea I really like is this kind we used to drink on the mish. The little old grannies used to make it from bark and herbs and things of the forest. I'm not sure what was in it, but it was good, and, sadly cannot be replicated in the USA.

OK, I've seen your cute little chick all over the place, but I don't think I've ever been to your site, so I decided to pop on over.

My coworker/friend makes this stuff that is some sort of root, but it tastes like coffee. She is LDS, and has this coffee maker at work. I can't remember what it's called, but it's sort of odd.

"Q" said...

Guess you'd better keep the chicky.

I have non-dairy-creamer at my house, you know for year supply emergency creaminess. When you talk to the bishop, don't rat me out!

mormonhermitmom said...

I had to laugh. Read somewhere in someone's family history that they threw the coffeepot in the oven when the missionaries/home teachers came over.

I agree with Jen. Love the smell of Irish Coffee but have been told the taste is nowhere near the smell. So I smell for free.

My Hubby is hoarding the last of his postum. He's still crying over the fact that they aren't making it any more. My kids love to have hot cocoa and oatmeal in the morning. Maybe I should look into a coffee maker too!

goddessdivine said...

I'm sure your bishop sneaks a Coke in a brown paper bag during bishopric meetings. You should be fine.

Have you ever heard of a microwave? Not only does it heat water, but it cooks food, too. ;-)

Jennifer said...

Now you've done it. I broke out the little kettle and made some for myself! And now I am craving the Coffeemate vanilla fat free! :)

I avoid coffee at all costs because I am obsessed with the smell of it. Ted and I decided that coffee is our greatest temptation in life.

I have a Sunbeam Hot Shot - makes a mug of HOT water for tea or hot chocolate in about 30 seconds. Just pour your water in the top, push a button. When the light goes off, dispense. Works for water for soup in a cup or jello too! They are about $15. I got mine through Amazon but I think you can order them through Target.com. I even found one once at Walmart for my daughter.

I thinks you need to get a new coffee maker.... I too have got mine through AJ Madison.

Hot chocolate sounds so good...I'll just pretend it's not in the high 70's here right now. :S

We have a tea pot on the stove for EXACTLY this reason! I love it! I guess we're evil around here too :D

I don't know if you remember me or not, I am goddessdivine's SIL. I kind of got tired of my old blog right about the time I invited you to it :P Sorry! But I did start a new blog if you ever want to stop by...

Good morning, thanks for reminding me how I need a cup of hot chocolate this morning. I don't have any tea at the moment :)

Hope the machine, evil as it may be, survives until Christmas, when it will be replaced for sure!
