I'm A Horrible Liar, Too

I think to be a good public speaker, you have to have a little bit of a dramatic flair. You know, that self awareness to be able to pause at the end of a thought so your audience has a chance to process before you move into your next idea. Or to wait and smile so they can laugh at your joke.

Sadly I have no dramatic talent in any bone in my body. I don't even cry when I bear my testimony.

I guess I'm just not cut out for public speaking, nor will you see me with a lead role in any play, ummm, ever.

On the up side (I guess) - I think you have to have acting talent to be a good liar. So I find myself having to tell the truth, even when I don't want to (like when the last 5 brownies are gone and I want to blame someone else!) because people can see right through me.

Apparently when the talents were being handed out in heaven I was standing in the wrong line. How did I end up with a talent for Remembering Hymn Lyrics? Maybe it sounded more noble at the time:

Hymn Lyrics
vs
Dramatic Flair

Or maybe the line was just shorter. I don't know!

So to all of you who were smart enough to get into the Good Liar Public Speaking Talent line. I'm jealous.

*****************

Basically, the short answer to the question "How did my talk go yesterday?" is -
I think it was adequate. Which is pretty much the best I hope for anymore.

I know you did great! Hey, hymn lyrics can really come in handy! I'm glad your a horrible liar, that is a great trait to have~you might say a great talent to have. It's all about is the glass half empty or half full.

I haven't had to do public speaking for a long time. I guess I better brush up on my lying.

It's always such a relief to have those talks over with. And you always do a better job than you think you did.
:~D

We are definitely the same. People always wonder how I know so many hymns---but if it's set to music I can remember it.

Speaking on the other hand....I'd rather pour lemon juice in a big paper cut.

I'm so jealous that you don't cry while bearing your testimony. All I have to do is start thinking about what I believe and out pour the tears. Ugh. (Not that I think it's such a terrible thing, either, I just wish I had a little control.)

I'm not sure I buy the whole "no dramatic talent" story.

If you didn't, you wouldn't know when to use strike through.

:-)

(hey, here's to pushing publish before you add the all important concluding smiley)

I'm sure you did very well. It's always better than you think.... :)

Wait....are you saying that good speakers are good liars? I'm confused....

I'm sure your talk was lovely.

I have a feeling your talk was FABULOUS.

Randi said...

Yep, goddessdivine, I am saying that I think the gene or personality trait or whatever it is that makes you good at either one of those, inherently makes you good at the other.

Not that if you are speaking you are lying. Just that you COULD.

The first problem with having the public speaking talent is that one is also blessed/cursed with the ability to discern exactly why other peoples' talks are poor.

The second problem with having a talent for public speaking is that - despite one jumping up and down saying, 'Choose me! Choose me!' - one is never called to speak as often as one might wish.

The final problem - and the corollary to the first problem - is that one is always very aware of how poorly one's own talk measured up. I've never given a talk above a solid B. (Admittedly, the average grade for talks given in sacrament meeting is a C-.)

The bonus is the flabbergasted looks of the face of the bishopric members when one exclaims, "Really? I'd love to speak! What's the topic?"

So there ya go.

I'm kinda envious of your memory for hymns. I'm the person always mixing up verses, making up my own lyrics, and generally sining off key.

I also wish I had the spelling talent.

Knowing hymn lyrics is great when you are wrestling little kids in Sacrament meeting for the cheerios on fast sunday. Hands free.

I wish I had your talent for knowing the hymns! I teach the singing in Primary, and I know the songs, but when I get up in front of the kids, my mind turns to mush! It's quite comical some days!

Glad it is over and glad you are pleased.

I have used the hymn card before. Works wonders.

I bet you are very modest too.

Yeah. I bet.

I have to speak in sacrament in two weeks, I'm not excited. I don't feel like I have any of the dramatic flair your talking about. However, back in the day, when I was going through a very rebelious streak in my teenage years, I was an amazing liar. I could come up with anything on the spot and I was rarely caught. So if I was so good at that, shouldn't I be an entertaining speaker? Not in my world. I wish though.

Hmmm, I don't consider myself a liar, but my Relief Society president did say this about me on my facebook this morning:
"Great lesson today. You really brought us all together. You should host a dance party."
So, I guess maybe I could lie to people at the dance party and tell them they were great dancers. Maybe if it was dark they'd believe me.

I have always had a "glass face" (meaning transparent, can see right through me, can't lie worth a darn) but lately it is more clouded. Maybe it's the wrinkles. (In other words, there's hope for you too! :)

Well dang. I didn't get in EITHER line.

Well, I took a power nap before Sacrament meeting (it was I think 1 1/2 hours) but I STILL had a hard time staying awake (narcolepsy) so I asked Pa and he said your talk was good. And he would have told me if it was stinko and I don't suppose I would have told YOU if he thought it was stinko - I just wouldn't have left a comment. So I guess what I'm saying is that Pa liked it and I'm sure I would have too if I was conscious...(it's a sad state of affairs to sleep through pretty much EVERYTHING) I must have gotten in a wrong line too - or I just realized I was asleep when the lines formed.....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I'm not great at hymn lyrics, but give me a number and I can tell you which hymn it is. For pretty much all of them.

You think that'll ever come in handy?

I gave a talk in church and everyone came up to me after and said "hey, great talk" Honestly, I couldn't remember what I said. I wrote the thing, I had an outline aand scriptures. I'm sure I shared some of that. But, for the most part I just went with what I felt and who knows what I said! I guess it worked out okay....

Oh yeah, I stood in the great at teaching Nursery line... at least that's what I have to tell myself since I've been there a million times....

I think you stepped into the hilarious blogger line the day talents were handed out.
