Love, Peanut Butter, and Pizza Rolls

I'm leaving town next week, which usually generates the same conversation between The Brain and me.
Me: would you like me to go shopping and leave a menu for while I'm gone?
Him: yeah, that would be great.

Me: are you going to use it? Because if you're going to just eat peanut butter sandwiches every night (his most favorite things to eat) I can save myself a lot of trouble.

Him: no, really. The kids will probably want something different after a few days.
So even though I'm skeptical, I set up some meals for the week, knowing full well that they will likely still be there when I get back. I don't think he means to ignore the menu. I really think that it's just not all that important to him like it would be to me if I were here. Which is probably the reason I'm the one in charge of dinners at my house, right?

So next week, when I come home to find the pantry shelf full of stuff to make Rice Krispie treats, white bread (shudder), Frosted Flakes, and Doritos... while the delicious and healthy things I planned out are squished to the far back of the shelf (probably muttering something about being upstaged by Flamin' Hot Cheetos) I will remind myself that it was never about the food in the first place.

It's about the fact that I cared.

And the pizza rolls that are ready in 90 seconds.

(ok, Dave totally wrote that last line. Thanks, Dave!)

I don't know that I'll bother planning a menu for when I leave the husband with kids (whenever that happens in the future). Unless I make it a freeze it for him to reheat, they'll probably all starve to death or eat fried nastiness every night. (or should I say fried goodness that is unfortunately bad for you?)

Isn't it funny how we do things not because they need to be done but because we need to do them?

there was a time you could buy me a gallon of chocolate milk and 3 packs of hot dogs and i'd be good for a week.

then i found the benefits of eating healthy, and food got much more complicated :-)

What a good wife you are... When I went out of town one week, one of my husband's co-workers asked him if I was going to prepare meals for him while I was gone. My husband turned to him, gave him a puzzled look, and said, "have you met my wife?"

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. I often come home from vacation to white bread, doritos, cheetos, etc., too, so maybe I'll just laugh--he probably wouldn't eat what I prepared anyway!

Oh yeah, when we would leave the boys home alone (read: A Very BAD Idea) it was all about Totinos. And maybe corn dogs. That was all they needed.
Just as a warning to you young Mom's: Don't EVER leave your teenagers home for a weekend. Really.
You may not find out some things until years later.

Boy I need to get out more just to find out how hubby and the kids would get along without me.

Oh who am I kidding, sometimes even I resort to cold cereal for dinner.

At our house it's Top Ramen, Canned Stew (I gag just thinking about it) and Hominy and Potatoes (another gag)

Enjoy wherever you go.

Pizza rolls taste better out of the oven. Kids these days, can't even wait twelve minutes for a better pizza roll!

When we were growing up it was Pop Tarts and Twinkies if we were left unattended (Mom didn't even have to go out of town....she just had to ask Dad to go to the grocery store for her).
