This Week's Reasons For My Family's Ongoing Dinner-Phobia

I like to cook.  Usually.
I mean, I'm not all into it like some of my friends, who make Trout Almondine with Currant Lime Sauce every night, but I don't really mind it.  I mind even less if I get to  make-up something random  use my culinary skills and experience to try something new about once a week or so.  My family would usually rather I didn't.

Here are two reasons from last week alone, that they might fear the kitchen.

Exhibit A - The Hockey Pucks.

No, they are not really hockey pucks, no they didn't turn out the way I envisioned them, and yes we ate them anyway and they were delicious.
They are actually tortillas which I was trying to shape into salad bowls and bake in the oven.  And it totally worked for the first 10 minutes or so...  After which they sort of flattened out and turned into misshapen -  - - well, I'm calling them tortilla plates, and everyone else is still calling them "those burned hockey pucks that mom made us eat".  Whatever.

Exhibit B - "Baked Rats"

Buddy and Lizzie are such over reactors- aren't they.  I mean, anyone can clearly see that these are OBVIOUSLY chili rellenos that were baked in the oven rather than fried in oil.
And they look perfectly delicious, right?

Me?  I'm just having a salad tonight.  You guys go ahead.

I figure they're either going to end up being wonderfully creative chefs, or in therapy for food issues for the rest of their lives. It's probably a 50/50 shot.

After 3 batches of failed hard boiled eggs, for deviled eggs, I finally bought pre-bought boiled eggs. I am ashamed.

LOL

have i ever told you about my pudding cake idea?

sometimes you just have to push the envelope out of the box.

"with great risks come great rewards."

...or, Baked Rats with a side of Hockey Puck.

There are MANY reasons why Kyle is loving eating at the Canon Center and my cooking skills is A BIG PART OF IT.

For me, it is NEVER about presentation ; )

My husband still won't let me live down the time I learned that 1/2 cup FRESH herbs does NOT equate to 1/2 cup DRIED herbs. I'm sure I will be reliving the tale of the green pasta until my dying day.

I'm a big fan of Chili Rellenos, those however might make me rethink my loyalty. I'm glad you are adventurous, and can laugh about the mishaps.

I would have eaten the tortillas! The chili rellenos... well, um... not so sure about those ;)

Hate to breakt it to you, but yeah they kind of do look like Rats. :)
I too love trying new things and experimenting.. it is the only thing that keeps me interested in cooking.

A tortillo plate sounds really good right now.

They DON'T look like baked rats, but baked trout. Yum!

My husband now picks the menu and gives me the recipes...that way he likes it and I'm less likely to mess up!

So I'd like to say I have always got your back, girl....but....baked rats? they are scaring me. So the culinary skills may have taken a back seat this week, next week will be way better. Can't say you didn't try...I just hope your family tries the next attempt at whatever floats your boat next. Good luck!!!

Hey you could start a recipe blog like my girls did - Carrie won't let us eat until she takes a picture. Then if we don't like it she won't post it.

Um, I'm sure this was not one of your better creations. Remember the second Indiana Jones movie? you know the feast scene with the monkey brains and spiders, I think I saw your dish on a corner of the table.

btw. I'm still alive and kicking and I've finally posted again on my blog.

Thanks for asking.

Any tortilla is a good tortilla in my opinion.

Mmmm..baked rats.

Isn't more about the taste and not the appearance? But with teenagers and husbands I think it's more about the appearance. I hate when things dont' turn out after slaving in the kitchen for hours. Keep trying. I'm sure the food was delicious.

Makes me wonder if there is a recipe for rat that could try. ;)

Maybe they would look like chili rellenos...

If they don't like it, THEY can make dinner from now on!
As long as you don't "experiment" when guests are over for dinner, like I do, I think you'll be fine.

Can I borrow your recipe for our school fundraiser? These are perfect!

Your son should try out for the Amazing Race. He would so ROCK at the "Eat-the-most-disgusting-thing-imaginable" roadblock!

Atleast you tried. Me experimenting = dumping a can of cream of mushroom soup on whatever.

Glad to see my recipe for hockey pucks is making the rounds at your house. Seriously, I ruin Rhodes rolls I'm so bad at bread making and baking.

Oh dear. Well, whining over a wrongly baked tortilla deserves spanking, but the rats? Oh my. Those look a LOT like rats. I personally don't really like rats for dinner, so I might have complained about those ones, too. ;)
