I Wonder What It Was?

Last Wednesday I was in line at Target, behind a man and his daughter. I'd guess she was about 11 or so.

girl: Dad - look how pretty those flowers are. You should get them for mom.

Dad: Yep, they're nice.

girl: Dad, tomorrow is Valentines Day. You need to get something for mom.

Dad: I already got something.

girl: Really? What?

Dad: Umm, I got her some other stuff.

girl: What other stuff?

Dad: I just already got her something, OK?

girl : Well, is it something that she's just going to end up never using and then giving to Goodwill?

* long pause*

Dad: The flowers ARE pretty, aren't they?

Yeah. That's what I thought, too.

PS: You are a chicken!

Er, your avatar in a chicken! Now when I see you I'll say "Justrandi is a chick and not a magic wand".
I love it.

Ha. I have a friend whose ten-year old son said to his dad, "Dad, I'm only ten, but even I know that when Mom asks how she looks, she just wants you to say, 'Great!'"

They learn so young.

Too funny. He should have learned by now to listen to the girls in his life.

Something tells me that Mom had that girl looking out for her. :D

I can proudly say that I never gave a kitchen appliance as a Valentine's Day present, although one girlfriend did get an awesome Craftsman toolbox once.

I found that the key was to listen carefully ALL year and keep lists. You can't go wrong if they ASK for something, right? Or if it has a big shiny rock on it.

I was right there with Kristen on that one!

I'm with Vern and Kristen.... was that really a conversation you overheard, or did Mimi tell realy this story to you??

JustRandi said...

Oh, it was a real conversation. And I definitely think he probably got her some um, "jammies", or something he didn't want to talk to his daughter about.
And I think the "jammies" may or may not be used once, and then will probably be gone. Whether it's Goodwill or whatever.

Good thing he got the flowers, too.

i love that! good mother advocate :) though I was under the impression that he got her something a little kinky!

Hey, you're a cute chick! ;)

I would have loved eavesdropping on that conversation...I would have been all ears! I was thinking he got her something dumb and stupid...such as those cheapie teddy bears wrapped in clear cellophane that people sell from tables set up on their driveways...or maybe that's just a ghetto Arizona thing. :P

About the Good Mail: Tori organized it, and sadly, I'm pretty sure the list is full. :(

If you'd like to organize a group of ladies who want to send cute stuff to each other in the mail, I'm sure Tori would be happy to tell you how to go about it! And if you do, I'd love to be on your list, so I can send YOU stuff! :D

It was probably my husband and daughter. Fits.

Mine was easy. My wife - despite the fact that she hadn't mentioned it - clearly REALLY wanted the signed Elway jersey with the Super Bowl XXXIII patch.

I'm nothing if I'm not romantic. And the look on her face when she got it was all the thanks I needed! And get this - she was so grateful, she told me I could put it in my office.

When my oldest son was two, I would coach him to say things to my husband like "Buy mom a diamond necklace."

It didn't work.

maybe the gift he bought was a little something from Victoria Secrets and he didn't want to share! hmmm -

This is totally random and off-topic. But I'm just curious what you ended up doing with your VTee. Did you give her some crunchy brownies and a hug? ;-)
