Just Put Me in the 7th Circle and Get it Over With

During conference yesterday, Mimi commented that Elder Eduardo Gavarret sort of looked like Andy from The Office. I would post his picture here, but the still picture doesn't really look much like Andy at all. But when we were watching, we all sorta laughed and agreed that he really did kind of look like Andy.

So anyway, we're listening along, completely enjoying Elder Gavarret's sweet Spanish accent. And then it happened. And if you have it on tape, I swear you can go back and listen to it.
He sort of stumbled on the translation, and instead of saying "bear my testimony" he said "beer my testimony" . ( He laughed and went back an corrected himself)

And I Could Not Stop Laughing.

I know that if you're not an Office fan, you're thinking, "Well, what's funny about that? And why are you making fun of his accent?" Which I really am not.

But every time I think about it, it makes me laugh right out loud. All afternoon and into the evening I just randomly remembered it and laughed right out loud. The Brain caught me giggling while I was brushing my teeth, and the only thing he could say? "Beer me strength." which I realize is not funny in the least, unless you are an Office fan, and then, well, you know what I mean.

( I don't want to hear about what it says about my mothering skills, when Andy from the office is the first thing that pops into my daughter's brain while watching conference.)

(And I especially don't want anyone to think that his talk and/or accent were anything but amazing. His message about inviting people back to church was fantastic! [See? I was listening!])

But come on, it's pretty funny right?

(I'll be back later with contest results!)

My daughter sometimes compares General Authorities to animals. In past conferences she thought one wonderful man looked like a mole. In this conference she decided another was the spitting image of a falcon.

What does THAT say about my mothering skills? :S

I think humor and faith should always go together. I'm a firm believer that God has the best sense of humor of all. I bet HE likes the Office too :)

All I could think was, "there are millions of Spanish-speaking members of the church. Will they please let this guy give his talk in his native tongue! Heaven forbid we have to read subtitles for 15 minutes!"

I remember that moment. I'm an Office fan, but I guess I don't get the humor in it, sorry. But I did notice when he did it. I thought it was worthy of a smile, but I just didn't find it that funny. Oh well.

Jeremy and I both caught that and had a smile, too.

I totally thought he looked like Andy too, in fact, I was going to say something to my family, but they don't really know the office (I am almost ashamed to call them family). But we did laugh when he said it, because he did.

It WAS funny, and I'll try to still think of you as a good mother. :)

I totally don't remember that. I was listening to him talk about bringing people back and then the kids erupted into a fight. I missed the beer, dang it!

my kids watch the office too, and they're only 3 and almost 2. It's the most family friendly show on tv. Well, besides conference I guess.

We heard it too and laughed our guts off! My hubby and I both served in Latin American countries where if the people learn English, they tend to speak with STRONG accents like he did. Most of the time, they would say "I would like to BURY my testimony". Still beer my testimony is so much funnier!!

Makes me want to watch The Office so I can get the joke, too!

Didn't see this talk yet. I went to two sessions live/tape-delayed here in the UK, and watched some on line, but am having probs with the viewer. I may end up downloading the audio only, just so I can HEAR it all!

Yeah, that made me smile. I was thinking how impressed I am with those guys learning English (a very difficult language) and speaking at General Conference in front of millions of people. That in and of itself is an accomplishment.

I appreciate that the general authorities so often now are presenting important messages to millions of people in their second language. No matter what blessings and talents they may or may not have, it's still quite the accomplishment!

Still, I wouldn't mind if they allowed the speakers to speak in their native tongue while dubbing or subbing in English. I think the only thing that prevents that is the vast majority of people attending at the Conference Center are probably speak English as their first language, and the minority attending just wear the translation headphones.

He does look like Andy. Great. Now I'm going to be thinking about Andy when I watch him.

""Andy Bernard.... is the name of me"

I'd probably miss the "beer my testimony".
I am known for saying things I don't mean to. I wonder why.
