Things I Wish Somebody Had Told Me

Probably everyone looks back at things in their past and wonders what the heck they were thinking!? I’m not talking about leg warmers or Madonna net skirts, either. Well, yes I am. What were we thinking? Anyway, here are five things I wish someone had mentioned to me earlier.

  1. Leg warmers and Madonna net skirts are stupid.
  2. You should have a plan for your elbows. I mean, I always knew that my elbows were kinda rough, but I never really had a plan, you know? But then my friend Q taught me a new trick. For the last year or so I’ve put lotion on my elbows every time I put it on my face. Who would have guessed what a difference that would make?
  3. Never buy disposable socks. And by disposable, what I mean is, any socks that don’t exactly match all the other socks. If I could have all the money back from pairs of socks that have only ever been worn once in this house, Maybe I’d have had enough money to hire a financial adviser to tell me to take my retirement fund out of the stock market before last month and we could have actually retired someday. See? Cute socks are evil, and have brought down the economy. Anyway, once I learned that I could buy white or black socks 3 pkgs at a time I never looked back. That’s 24 pairs of socks that all match exactly for about $15. And the best part is because they all match each other, I don’t even match socks anymore. I just throw them into the sock basket and let everyone grab them as needed. This theory works best when all the kids in the house wear the same size socks, but even when they didn’t, I was still better off buying all matching socks in each size.
  4. You are 5 times thinner than you think you are. All my life I’ve thought of myself as having weight issues. Now I look back at pictures and wonder WHAT I was thinking! Come on - you do the same thing, right? If I could talk to myself 10 years ago, it would be a serious pep talk about this… which kinda leads me to wonder if future me would tell present me the same thing right now.
  5. There is no such thing as too much sunscreen. My short stint as a Mary Kay lady taught me a surprising amount about skincare, and I saw too many women who didn’t wear sunscreen and what those years of UV rays will do. I wear it every day on my face and hands... And elbows.

I've been using lotion on my elbows for years--just in case it does do something.

The sock thing is worth considering.

I totally hear ya on the thinner thing! Good grief---if I could even have myself back as I was two year ago I'd be pleased.

I love the sock thing. I discovered this about 2 years ago, and it makes my life so much easier!!! And I don't have to dread sorting the socks on laundry day!

Thanks for the lotion/elbow tip!

I SO hear you on the weight and sock thing.... my elbows.. well, WHY DIDNT YOU TELL ME THAT SOONER???

Another good idea for soft elbows: cut a lemon in half and sit for a few minutes with an elbow in each half. It's amazing what it'll do!

When my 3 daughters were still at home, we kept a large plastic bin in the hall closet and ALL socks went into it. That way we could always find something that matched.

Hi- so as not to be a blurker I thought I'd just say I stumbled upon your blog and really enjoyed it!
Totally hear you on the weight thing- I always think it's bad until it gets worse and then I want bad back...

Here's a sock tip we learned at RS Enrichment night when we were young and newlywed and completely gullible:

1. When you put your socks away, pin them together at the ankle with a safety pin.
2. When you wear the socks, leave the pin attached to one of your socks.
3. When you remove the socks at the end of the day, PIN THEM BACK TOGETHER. The safety pin won't come off in the washer, and you WON'T LOSE YOUR SOCKS.

Go ahead...ask me if I do this.

The answer is: No. (I was a rebel!)

Instead, I keep an Orphan Sock bag because there just aren't enough sock puppets in the world.

My most beautiful friend taught me about extra moisturizer on tough spots. AND WE WERE ONLY 14 AT THE TIME. She had it goin on.

But now, 10 years later, I can feel better about preventative moisturizing. And it's already a habit for the time in my life when I find I'm needing it a bit more :)

Why doesn't someone tell us about the sock thing when we first have a baby? Why does everyone have to discover that for themselves? And why did it take me 15 years to figure it out?

I just pulled up my sleeve to feel my elbow. I had forgotten about them.

I'm an elbow lotioner at night before bed. And I just purchased some "same socks" for Brynns. And about that weight thing, I'm trying to love my 4-week-post-baby-body but it's DANG hard.

I'll have to try the lotion thing.

I'm too particular about my socks. That wouldn't work for me. I DO wish some socks would come with labels that read: "These socks suck."

Thanks for the elbow tips--now I need heel tips!!

You must have looked at the Sunday ad's - LEG WARMERS ARE BACK. And stirrup pants! The most uncomfortable pants in the world, you have something under you foot in your shoe and it's painful. Hopefully they'll both die a quick and painful death.

AND sometimes when you have lemons, you should cut it in half and rub it on your elbow because that makes it look really nice and un-dingy-like.

I can't wait till my kids are old enough to all have matching socks! I already do that for my own socks. Sure, sometimes I envy cute, outfit-matching socks, but it's just not worth it.

I do have to say, though, that legwarmers are the coolest thing... on babies!! I don't particularly like the 80's styles coming back, but legwarmers on kids is TOO CUTE. (google Babylegs, if you aren't familiar!)

Totally love your sock idea, it will happen when all the kids get old enough! Oh- I like the elbow thing, you know my mom always says that she wishes she would have taken better care of her neck- so I am way into taking care of my neck! Funny!

I love #4--so true.

The other thing I wish someone had told me--don't pluck your eyebrows too thin!!!

I stumble upon your blog via the mormon mommy blogs and I had to comment. I so agree with the 5 times skinnier, I see pictures of myself 5 years ago and holy cow I wonder what the heck was I complaining about.

Love the sock plan! Boy, can I relate to that one!

Love the lotion advice, too. I will try this...I could sand the doors of our metal shed with my elbows.

Okay, maybe not. But still...

SOCKS!!! So true. Last month I bought a gazillion sock pack from Costco and I love them, they feel great and none, not a single one is in my "lost sock bag" which is full of cute socks.

You can never wear too much deodorant.

I wish someone had told me ahead of time how lousy it feels to be pregnant. Wouldn't that be the best contraceptive--knowing how lousy you would feel and bloated you get and how frequently you have to go to the bathroom.

i like the new kid socks that have different colored toes...it's thought-less and fabulous. :)

mormonhermitmom said...

If only all the kids were the same size...but no. So I get one kind of sock for each kid and it's easy to sort which belong to whom.
I wish someone would have told me about how to keep your stomach before having the first child. I think I have two spares. AAAAAGH

I'm 5 times thinner than I thought? Sweet! Only, tell that to my clothes!

As for the socks, I used to be pretty anal about the socks. I would label the bottom of each sock. Every pair had a number and a letter (R or L). This was because I hated those bags of totally matching socks. I want socks that are unique mates to one another. They are so much easier to find that way!

Plus, if you always wear one sock on one foot, they don't wear differently in the toes and you don't get bunchy spots where they shouldn't be...

#1 I never wore leg warmers.
#2 I've always lotioned my elbow, and my neck, and my knee and my heels, same time I do my face :-)
#3 I love this idea. Implementing.
#4 Well I use to wear a size 2, now I'm a 4, and I'm barely 5 feet tall so I have weight issues NOW.
#5 Amen to the sunscreen! My husband has non malignant skin cancer. The blond boy with sun kissed skin now has issues. So lather it on.

My elbows are okay, but it took me a while to learn that lotion works wonders on feet, too!!

Thanks for the words of wisdom! :)

Don't forget heels, too! Face, elbows, heels. Your feet will thank you - in ten years.

We call them Norwegian elbows in our house, after a Norwegian exchange student who at the age of 17, had the elbows of a 90 year old.

oh the weight thing some days i wish i was as "fat" as I was in high school...too bad no one told me I looked great...I just got the "boys don't like fat girls" from my mom and I wasn't even fat...oh well...

come follow me :)

Love the elbow tip!! I use to put petrolum jelly on my heels every night when I got into bed. But now that i have a little boy who has touble staying in bed....it is kinda hard to yell "get back into bed" and expect the 4 year old to do it. (Thus I have had to stop treating the feet so I can walk on the carpet to get him back to bed!!)

I wholeheartedly agree with you on the sock thing. We are finally getting to the point where I can buy sets of socks since we're close to the same size, only what I hate is that my girls like to run around in their socks...outside. So they all have holes in them. Very frustrating!

Living in Hades, I mean the Phoenix area, I am pretty much smart about sunscreen. I use facial moisturizer with sunscreen built in, then I apply whatever is left on my hands onto my ugly elbows...not because I'm smart about my elbows, but because I don't really want to moisturize my towels. ;)
