Wop bop a loo bop a lop bam boom!

The blogger poll thingy is still broken, and I really want opinions, so I guess a post will do the trick.

Grease - the musical

Is this an appropriate production for a group of teens?

Tell me what you think!

prolly not. too sexually suggestive.

it may be possible to edit it, but the song summer lovin' doesn't even lend itself to that (i think)

oh, and FIRST!!

(oh yeah, don't be jealous)

(cause you know you are!!)

Yeah, too much, but the teachers don't care. I also hate it when there is swearing in the play, and the teachers tell them that they will get kicked out of the play if they don't say the words. Grrrr.

I've known of high schools doing this, but I believe it's way too racy for kids.

Irony: Loved this movie/play as a kid (13? 14?) and thought it was just awesome. Then I watched it again at 18 and I was FLOORED at how much sex was in it! Holy crap! The whole premise is about sex and making fun of prudes (thus Sandi's amazing transformation at the end into the epitomy of rebellion).

It's amazing what a little experience/education/perspective can do to the innocent eyes...

As fun as some of the songs are, I don't know that it's the best idea. Although I don't have any suggestions as to what is better. Aida?

Yeah probably a bit too suggestive.

Haven't a clue what would be better--sorry.

Probably not. But I sure loved it as a teen! I remember watching it on a few YW sleepovers. Fun times. But not so appropriate in retrospect...

Completely inappropriate. Just become a slut, and then the guy will like you!!

But this battle has been lost so often, I don't know what to tell you. It's been produced by high schools all over the country, and will be again, and I cringe every time I see it.

When I first saw it when I was 12, I missed alot of the heavier sexual stuff. Now I see it and can't believe how sexual it all is. Every song is about it and the whole idea of changing yourself to get a guy/girl doesn't bode well for me. So I woudl say yes to the question. Not ideas you want to encourage.

Jeff and I were wondering if that's what the next one was going to be. Hmmm, see the problem is, it's not just high school kids in the teen group, is it? I think it's too much of all the above stated stuff. The songs are dang fun, though. Wonder if the script is the same as the movie. . .when's the read through?

Has anyone noticed the words to grease lightning? I didn't until a few years ago, after MANY (10) years of loving the movie.

great, now I'll have all the songs running through my head for the rest of the day.... :)

totally what everyone already said! I remember loving it as a teenager, and totally not getting any of the sexual innuendos, but they are clear as day now. I have no suggestions of something better though, other than the same old classics, "music man", etc. Is this HS or Mimi's theater group?

Like lots of others here, I LOVED the movie when I was younger. Saw it the other day and truly couldn't believe how inappropriate it is...and how I didn't catch it before!?!?

Totally not. Appropriate, that is. And yet, statistically speaking, it is the most produced high school play in America. Right next to Wizard of Oz. Don't ask me where I got that statistic, but it's true.

Personally, I can't wait for "The Secret Garden" musical which is coming our way this winter. If you've never heard the music, look it up on itunes -- it's hauntingly beautiful!!! First time I heard it, I was driving and had to pull over on the freeway because I was crying so hard.

I'm with the others. I first saw this play in junior high and loved it. Later, when I was old enough to realize what everything meant, I was a little shocked that this was deemed appropriate for 7th graders.

And Greased Lightning lyrics? Whoa.

Ditto.

um, no. nobody should ever watch it.

i vote yes.....just because nobody else has. i know my fictitious opinion will LOOSE considering the odds. :)

Ditto not knowing what all that stuff meant when I was younger.

I'm on the fence. It's been done so much there may not be much overall controversy over it depending on where you are. I think it's better than the play Biloxi Blues, where a kid goes to a prostitute to lose his virginity on stage. But then again, there is always something worse.

How long has it been since Oklahoma was done where you are;)?

Dude, let's be honest--it's all about sex.

Amy Peterson said...

I think that it could probably be done tastefully! It does have great music and dancing, whoever, there is a LOT of sex in it! But, if someone was smart they could pull it off. The only bad news is that most times kids watch the original to get into character, not such a good idea there. I'm split! Does that mean I'm a bad person?

I love the music (except for what the words mean!) but I was always bummed that Sandy didn't choose to stay sweet and everyone else decided to convert to being good and pure. Hmmm. Not much excitement I suppose. Of course my girls all loved it growing up too. Vote Nay

I would have said yes...until I sat down and started to watch it with my grandma. When I realized that I was embarrassed by things I hadn't remembered were there the channel was swiftly changed.

My vote now as an adult and a mom - no

beckers said...

I don't think I can say anything new here. Great songs. Bad message(s). Not appropriate.

beckers said...

And I don't mean that the messages to the songs are great.... just that they are catchy and good show-tunes. :)

Like so many others, I didn't understand a lot of things in it when I was young, then I realized when I got older that it was pretty much awful!

Our local junior high did a "family friendly G-rated" version of it. I don't know how or where they got the edited script, but it really WAS clean and appropriate for kids! :)

Our Stake did a road show based on Grease a few years back and it was a big hit.
It ended up being written as a musical and the lead characters went to the Temple at the end.
The "clean" songs were used or others changed. It worked really well.
My son was a Senior in H.S. and did the "Greased Lightning" song and it was way fun!
Good Luck!

I love that you are wondering!! No. And yes it is lonely to be a teenager and make these hard decisions. I remember when Pres. Hinckley commented on how lonely it is to be a teenager today.

Hey I'm a teen right now (soon to be 14) and yes I'll admit that some of the songs do imply some questionable morals. I didn't notice what it meant when I was younger either but now that I understand it, I love it even more! It has funny charecters with a good story! I am going to be in the musical at my highschool next year and I couldn't be more excited! I can't belive how upset some people are getting over the play! People always say to accept others but then they get angry at people for liking certain books, music, or plays. People who listen to different music or like different movies arn't forcing those things on you or your kids so why not just let them have a happy life? And so
none of you say I'm a godless infidel with no morals I'd just like to tell you that I am LDS. Seriously people, take a chill pill!!
