JustRandi Vs The Brain - Round 2

We debate, you decide.

One of us thinks that when you take the empty canning jars back down to the basement to store them until the next canning season, it is better to store them upside-down, thus preventing creepy spiders from crawling in and meeting their doom.

Note the fact that this will also prevent anyone from having to PICK UP A JAR FULL OF SPIDER CARCASSES to wash it out before the next use.

The other person thinks they would rather store the jar right-side-up. Yes, you have to wash out the spider remains. BUT AT LEAST YOU KNOW WHERE THE SPIDERS ARE.

Upside-down? or Right-side-up?

Well, I think you already know the answer to this. Who wants spiders in anything?

Stacey said...

I vote for upside down. Spiders are yucky dead or alive!

Tay said...

Upside down. The spiders kill the other nasty things in your house, like mosquitos and ants and stuff. They're most useful alive, as creepy as they are.

Dead spiders are worse than alive ones.

Upside down, because I'm pretty sure that's the one you want and I like to feel supportive.

Jennifer said...

But, right side up or down. You still have to wash the jars anyway. Right?

Or there's my husband's third option of throwing them all away because the wife is never going to use them anyway.

And my option of it doesn't really matter because whenever I do finally get around to canning something hubby gets to get the jars for me and risk his own life with those nasty spiders.

What Jennifer said--you're washing them anyway.

Mine probably have lots of spiders--haven't used them in too many years.

Upside down - I hate looking at dead spiders, and so should you!

I vote for upside down as well. And as long as we're on this subject, how about light fixtures? Do the globes go up or down? I say down, to prevent dust and bugs from settling inside and to focus the light downward where it's needed. Hubby says the opposite. And since he's the one with the electrical know how, all ours are up!

Upside down. Keeps out the spider carcasses and dust too.

I would just like to add that I am really impressed that you can things.

Barbaloot said...

Can you not just put a lid on them?

Right side up. My kids would like to examine the shrivelly, decomposing spiders. Is all in name of science.

I vote for option 3: throw them out. Then you don't have to can!

But I'm guessing you're the 'upside down' kinda girl. Aren't you the one that still freaks out for days after an encounter with an 8-legged creature? I don't blame you though; those things are NASTY

wrapped in cellophane or plastic wrap and stored any which direction - that way you don't have to wash them again in the new season, heat 'em up, and go

JIlly-
I can jam and salsa. And that's pretty much it!

But we DO go through a lot of salsa.

mormonhermitmom said...

Not that I've ever canned (gasp) but i would vote upside down. There's more than spiders creeping around.

Dave said...

you can can salsa????

wow, a whole new world just opened up.

maybe i can find a good "star wars salsa" recipe to can!!!

oh wait.... no star wars today. dang

I am completely conflicted on this one. Yay for dead spiders. Boo for having to deal with them.

Take the jars down to the basement? I never thought of that. When we need jars, we collect them from the tupperware drawer, in the pantry, in the baking cupboard or basically any shelf that is handy when some teenager is emptying the dishwasher on any given day.
Actually I heard you should fill them with water when they are not being used to extend your water storage and not waste the empty space in the jars. But that's just what I've heard. Obviously we're too unorganized to actually do that.

Upside down, keeps a lot of dust out too. But the water idea is interesting, I never thought of that. Okay, I'll fess up. I WOULD store them upside down if perhaps I was ever the one to take them to the basement ;) When you have someone else do that chore - what can I say. Of course I also let him bring them up and deal with the dead spiders.

beckers said...

Definitely upside down. eewwwww on shriveled up hairy spiders!!!

Yvonne said...

Upside down, OF COURSE!!!! Shall I add--that is a "no brainer" ; )

melissabastow said...

Who wants to KNOW where the spiders are. Let's just pretend like they don't exist. Eeeeek.

Upside down.

A vote for Upside down is a vote for correctness!

Well, you know what "they" say about this.......I say go for the water thing, if not get a tote to store them in to keep the creepy crawleys out and to aid in easier carrying up the stairs when you're ready to can! Woo hoo! So far, I've done some strawberry jam, ooohhh so good!

Hope you have a good weekend! ♥ Hugs!

I'd just put a lid on them too. However, if you're bent on one way or another, I'd say upside down because NOT seeing the spiders won't freak me out like actually seeing them would.

Cole said...

You mean you're supposed to take things out of the basement after you put them down there?!? Whoa, do I need to catch up!

How about you ship all your spiders to my house to scare away the hornets that found a way into my basement last year to make a nest in my insulation! Then maybe it won't happen again this year.....and both of you can have jars which ever way pleases.

Jen said...

Ugh! I vote for NO spiders period. But I store mine upside down. I can't stand washing them out! Bleck.

Heather said...

I think either way is perfectly acceptable....

Carrie said...

Upside down! Who wants to come into contact with those nasty things? ever? in any form? Ish!

Loralee and the gang... said...

I think open end down. only because you'd end up with less dust AND fewer spiders. The bodies can hide somewhere besides the food vessels, thank you!
:~D

Adrienne said...

Dude. Upside down.

We always put a lid in them (upside down, so they don't inadvertently seal up again) so I haven't had to deal with the spider carcasses. It sounds like a few sticky spider traps on the basement floor might be in order, considering how much you blog about spiders and your hate for them! I know that's what I go for (or call Bro. Montgomery) when I see more than 1 spider during the week!

Melissa said...

I've always stored mine right side up... but you have a good point there... perhaps upside down WOULD be better.

Upside down for sure!!
