Brace Yourself

I know people who think that December is the busiest month of the year.
Bwwahahahah
Well, you're probably still young.

You'll learn.

I mean, yes, Christmas and all that does make a busy month.  But the thing is, you recognize it, and you brace for it.  And if you're smarter than I am, you start preparing for it early.  There are checklists and systems and  savings accounts - and if you set it up just right, there is an illusion out there that your entire month can be spiritual and magical.

You rarely hear anyone say "spiritual and magical" when talking about the month of May.

(Or maybe I've just been doing it wrong.  I'll admit, I've never searched the internets for a Magical May system and checklist.)

See, the thing is... in my life May brings everything that December brings, except you don't get the fun of Christmas, and you don't get the 2 weeks off at the end of the month.
Just replace "Christmas" (or "Winter" if your school is all p.c. about it) with "End of the Year"or "Spring" and you'll have all the same things:
choir concerts
band concerts
field trips
class parties
piano recitals
teacher gifts
ward parties
finals

Oh, and then add:
field days
baby showers
outdoor lab school week
weddings
bridal showers
graduations
Memorial Day projects
and
the biggest yardwork month of the year (at least in Denver)

This year because I'm leaving town, I'm trying to cram all of May into April.

Surprisingly, that's not as easy as it sounds.

Even more surprisingly that doesn't leave a lot of time for blogging. (and i refer to blogging in the interactive sense, not just the hey I wrote some boring crud and posted it sense.)

So I'm just popping in to say -hi,  I miss you, and I hope to be back soon.  Probably after my spiritual and magical May.

PS Hannah tells me she has finished our Epic road Trip vids - though I have yet to see them.  So if the first one didn't bore you out of your mind, pop in and see the next ones in the next few days!

I am finding that as my kids get older, my spring gets busier. Plus my hubby teaches high school, so he is insanely busy as well!

You are so wise, my friend.

Hmm. Does May have all the shopping and lame parties you feel obligated to go to? Because then it would really pass up December. I guess I dodged some more bullets by not having kids: I don't have band and choral concerts to attend; nor graduations.

Glad you were at least able to come up for air (for a few seconds).

I'm on the edge of my seat for the next epic installments. ;-)

Totally with ya. When you have kids in school and with activities outside school (piano, dance, whatever), life is NUTS from about mid-April through May.

And it's made even more hellish by the fact that I've had book promotion, conference to speak at, and cookbook book photo shoots. I'd WELCOME December over this!

Can I give my child to another family when she gets old enough for all this stuff? A family of monkeys? Some kangaroos?

Yup, I totally agree with your list! UGH! Plus senior pictures, musicals, drama performances, proms, parent college days, graduations, at the same time I'm doing Kindergarten registrations and preschool registrations for next year. Oh and gotta cram all the shots and check ups (sport required) in the next few weeks so the kids will be allowed to participate in ther summer practices. Yeah, May ain't magical. It's simply a mystery how we survive..and then our reward??? Blazing hot summers with tons of kids who are stuck inside all day. nice.

My kids aren't quite old enough to have all of those concerts and such. We're pretty boring and kinda lame I guess. I'll have to work on that!

Suh-weet! Enjoy Magical May!

With my kids just entering into society and all, I'm starting to see the May thing. And it's probably going to get worse for me, isn't it? At least now I've been warned, and I'll be looking for some magical May check list coming from you later...

I agree that the end of the school year is very much like December.

Just think of all the money you could make if you road a book "Preparing for May for Dummies".

Looking forward to all the road trip videos. Can't imagine ever coming to your blog and being bored.

I was just thinking that my May was crazy busy! Good luck to both of us!

We have three birthdays in May in our immediate family, and another 3 in the extended family. That's our "second Christmas" as far as gift shopping is concerned.

I never thought about it, but you are totally right. The end of the school year is just as insane as December!

But at least May is warm! That makes the business bearable, no?

Those who are going on a 2 week vacation to CHINA don't really get room to complain....I know cause I tried it today! :)

I'm with Barbaloot. you don't have three foot snow storms to get through.

I hope you enjoy your roller coaster ride called "May" and make it to the end without feeling too tossled. It feels like a busy month for me too-I can only imagine how that increases as the kids get older. I'm telling myself that if I remember to do the essential things then I'll be able to take care of the rest (without falling apart).

Sorry to be the lone disagreer, but I just can't put May in the same category as December. December really is all about Christmas and Christmasy stuff, while May (when you have kids at home) is like one big busy day that never ends!

I just stumbled upon your blog (even though there are other things I should be doing) and I love it. :)

Uh, so like I am back now so...
like you should be back too.

It's already MAY, you know?

I SOOOO agree with you about the May thing! :/

Besides all the regular May stuff, my mom's birthday is 2 days before Mother's Day, and my youngest son's birthday is the day after Mother's Day. EEEK! :0
