It's getting ugly over here.
Last week, a couple of McCain lawn signs went up in my neighborhood, which inspired me to get my own McCain sign.
Apparently those things are like congress bailout plans. They're everywhere, but actually nailing one down is nigh impossible. My friend Q and I had to go down to our republican hq and practically beg for them. Since last week they've changed their groveling policy, and are giving a sign to anyone who's willing to go down there and make 8 phone calls, which I think is a better plan, but honestly! You'd think they'd be passing them out on street corners around here, the way things are looking.
I live on a corner, and I proudly jammed those little prongs into my lawn last week, only to watch the neighbors' kids run over the sign with their little motorized two-seater car. Lovely.
(Really, I never wanted to be the mean old lady who doesn't like the neighbor kids, but they are constantly running through my flowerbeds and they drive me nuts. Also there are about 300 of them that live on our street.)
(I'm blaming it on the fact that politics make people mean.)
That was when the email hit the fan. Apparently our Vietnamese rooster friend across the street has never connected the fact that The Brain is the HOA president, because he sent a raging email demanding that the McCain signs be taken down throughout the neighborhood, especially that bent one on the corner which is such an eyesore.
He got a polite email reply that informed him that Colorado law specifically allows political signs for 45 days before the election.
Even though he thinks it's incredibly tacky, he then threatened to go get his own Obama signs. Which I would LOVE! It would make some new targets for his kids and their little car. At least they might play on their own lawn for a change.
(See?? Why would I say that? Clearly it's the politics talking.)
Anyway, Obama signs are apparently a little easier to come by than McCain signs, because they've appeared throughout my neighborhood in large numbers in the past couple of days.
Rooster Man does not have one in his yard, yet. I guess he might have caught on to that target thing.
I've considered going door to door to people who don't have signs and asking them if they'd like one, but I think our neighborhood is polarizing itself quite nicely already, thank-you.
So this morning I did the only thing I could do. I one-upped everyone by putting out my American Flag. Hey. I'm not above using the flag as a weapon. I've LONG been the only house on my street that ever displays a flag on patriotic days.
And I'm nothing if not patriotic.

KNow what is hapening over here? ALL the McCain signs are getting stolen!! THEN.. REPLACEd with Obama!!! NOT FUNNY!
WAIT! Are you saying this Obama guy actually has signs? I've heard of him, but I thought maybe it was all just a myth.
So, he really does exist, huh?
Crazy!
Paul, in Utah
Wave that flag!
We have not seen as many signs in our area as we did with local races. I did see one that says "I am a bitter gun owner - and I vote."
i'm surprised we don't have more oboma/mccain signs. most of the ones in my neighborhood are for local politics. another reason i can't wait for this election to be over.
How dare you talk about politics. Didn't I just finish telling you I don't want to talk about it? The very nerve.....
By the way, I think you should put McCain AND Obama signs in your yard. Just to give the neighbors something to talk about. It would be hilarious.
I agree to Mombabe, put up both signs, and then, just to make things a little more confusing, get a few more with Mitt and Hilary on them.
I'm getting a McCain sign as well. If anything, he is a man that LOVES this country and has served it to the full extent of the meaning "served."
Politics knows no boundaries! We don't have a sign up because we're not supposed to have them up in our neighborhood. At least, that's what we've been told... maybe we should check into it again... hmmmm....
You know, maybe you should put a bunch of nails in your flower beds... I've heard the iron is good for the soil... and... uh... stuff...
You go girl!! I love it!
melissa- i would hope that you can put up political signs in your neighborhood. Otherwise, what country are we living in, again? I thought this was America! Also- I totally agree with the idea of putting nails in the ground.
Get a nail strip, like the police use. Not for damaging tires, of course, but to deter cats from defecating in your plants. If someone happens to ride through your bushes on a scooter and pops a tire, that is entirely their own fault. What were they doing riding through your bushes in the first place?!
Ok, Imerie, I'm loving that sign. I want one. I also want one that says I'm clinging to my religion.
I like some of the other ideas--putting signs up for the primary contenders. Just fight fire with fire.
And what's up with McCain not handing those things out like candy? You'd think he would since he's down in the polls. Perhaps because he hasn't raised as much $ as the Obaminator.
I think you ought to put a sign up saying You are running for president.
My hubby's grandpa's house was on a corner with no sidewalk. Crazy nut jobs would cut across his corner in their four wheel drives. He put a row of sharp volcanic rocks the size of basketballs every few feet on that corner. Several other corner neighbors did similar things with low brick walls. Reduced the number of "shortcuts" significantly.

Good for you for displaying the flag. I always love it when people do! Holiday or not!
You rock sista!
I love the idea of putting up signs for McCain,Obama,Clinton and Romney. LOL!
I have this "earthmom" neighbor who thinks Palin is completely evil because she wolf hunts. THAT's her reasoning for voting for Obama. Whatev.
Love the blog! My first time here, L.O.V.E. it!!!
OK- I totally get it- I am so sick of politics now (and I don't even live in Colorado), you know it started like a year ago. I am so sick of people smashing each other, and I am so sick of how BLIND people really are to the facts and reality of this election. So, I must say I am retiring from the news channels for a while, I can't handle it anymore-
I'm just gonna go American too!
I think rooster guy is putting the Obama signs in other people's lawns in order to keep the kids away from his own lawn.
You go girl. I love the addition of the Flag.
I just received a air soft gun that I use sparingly for those cute adorable children that can't help but run through the flower beds. (ha ha ) Curtis said I really can't shoot the neighbor kids but hey a little bop in the ankle wouldn't hurt anyone. Also bribery works well in our neighborhood I gave all the neighborhood kids otter pops to pull out all the Obama signs from the neighborhood lawns. (oops is there something wrong with that)

The US election campaign has even spread to far away South Africa. We see it on the news and hear hear about it on the radio :)
"""I live on a corner, and I proudly jammed those little prongs into my lawn last week, only to watch the neighbors' kids run over the sign with their little motorized two-seater car. Lovely.""""
....I am still laughing....
Haven't seen that many signs here in our Northern California town. But it's Obama land so when I see a McCain bumper sticker I get excited and go, "Oh. Lookie! A McCain sign!" And my kids are like what's the big deal Mom? Ah, the apathy of youth.
Keep that flag flying!!! LOVE IT.
Your response of thinking evil thoughts is perfectly normal, just ask Meg Ryan. Remember in "You've Got Mail" where she keeps saying mean things and then apologizes? It's just stress talking, the kind of stress brought on by the potential of higher taxes and homosexuality as a Kindergarten course. It happens.
It's a lot easier getting our grubby little hands on signs for local political hopefuls...and somebody even steals THOSE! :0
I'm putting out my flag. TODAY!
Ah Change. Don't you love it?
Yeah, take that haters, JustRandi has her American flag out now! Can't stop you know :) HAHAHAHA!
