Quote Time

So my mom called yesterday to ask where the Cliff Notes great quotes from General Conference are. She was referring to this post where I asked people to submit their favorite one-liner type quotes from conference. The winner of my little contest, happymommy, was promised Fabulous Prizes!

The only problem is that through a series of circumstances which started out beyond my control, and ended up with the fact that I dreeeeeaaaaad going to the Post Office (also beyond my control, I might add), I have yet to mail out that prize.

And so how could I offer a new contest with new prizes, if I hadn't yet paid up on the previous prize? Right? Even though I fully intend to do it. (though the ever gracious happymommy has probably given up on the idea of ever getting anything...)

But yesterday I tried to learn to knit (more about that in another post) while I watched conference at the same time, dutifully sitting my freshly blank notebook page and pen next to me on the couch. Frankly it didn't work. My notebook page is disappointingly empty of the wonderful quotes I'm sure were said, but I didn't catch because I was focusing more on counting stitches and how to purl.

When my kids were younger, I went out of my way to make cool kid's conference packets, bingo games, and have great breakfasts, so that everyone would sit down and pay attention!

I don't know. I think I need a grown-up game to help me listen better. We do have a family game that we play for the Sunday morning session, but I want something that spans all the sessions.

So the quote hunt is back on.

  • Leave your favorite quotes in the comment section. You can leave as many as you like.
  • The first one to leave the best quote (judged completely arbitrarily by me) will win.
  • Sessions included start with last week's Young Women's Broadcast, and end with the Sunday afternoon session today.
  • We'll have the contest end this Tuesday night, to give everyone time to get their quotes in.
  • You can stream the sessions here if you want to play, but don't know where to watch the conference.

And seriously. Prizes will be mailed out THIS WEEK.
I promise I'm good for it. (Just ask happymommy)

There you go, mom! Cliff Notes are on the way!

I liked Elder Ballard's grandson, "You're gonna text your talk?"

jjstringham said...

Mine's from the same talk - "You can't text message faith."

Barbaloot said...

This isn't word for word since the texts aren't up yet...but from Elder Pino's talk; Living the gospel doesn't mean we will be with adversity, just that we will be better prepared to overcome it.

I'll watch today and get back to you!

And when I was in college, I used to take copious and detailed notes. Not anymore. I watch and multitask, and also pour over the Ensign when it comes.

The Lord will shape your back to fit the burden by Neil Anderson

I'm a nobody and your a nobody and if you ever forget it the Lord will remind you and it won't be pleasant by Pres. Monson and Neil Anderson.

For most of my life I've been trying to become what she (his wife) already thought I was. Elder Anderson

Thanks for the motivation to take notes. I enjoy your blog! Don't pick me though because I live in switzerland...

Neil L. Andersen about his wife. "For most of my life I've been trying to become what she thought I already was!"

Mine isn't a quote so it doesn't count but at the end of the Sunday AM session when they are singing "We Thank The Oh God For A Prophet" they showed a clip of the first presidency leaving the stand with their wives. Pres. Monson has his wife by the arm. Pres. Eyring has his wife by the arm. Pres. Uchtdorf has his arm around his wife's shoulders and is giving her a nice squeeze. LOVE IT!

I liked it during the Saturday morning session when Elder Uchtdorf announced the next two speakers as Elder Ballard and someone else, but the next person that got up was the Managing Director for the Auditing department and he just looked at the podium and said, "I am neither." And then proceeded with the report. LOL Bro. Uchtdorf had a nice shade of pink on his face when it was really time for the apostles to speak.

Jenn said...

From Elder Ballard, "You cannot google search testimony. You cannot text message faith."

From Elder Uchtodorf, "Discipleship is not a spectator sport. Ours is not a second hand religion. We cannot experience the gospel by watching."

I liked
Eternal life is not a sprint
Pres. Uchtdorf
But that is probably not word for word!

Camille said...

"You can't be a lifesaver if you look like the rest of the swimmers on the beach."
Dallin H. Oaks on modesty

"You are never lost when you can see the temple"
Gary E. Stevenson's young son

I like this idea of picking out and remembering the best quotes. I wish I would have done it for the Saturday sessions!

I also loved when Pres. Uchtdorf made the mistake and Robert Cantwell said, "I am neither." He was my accounting teacher when I was going to school for my degree 10 years ago. He is awesome and has a very dry sense of humor.

Jenn beat me to the punch with my favorites.

But here are some others:

"Reverence is turning off your cell phones" Sister Lifferth

"We don't acquire eternal life in a sprint; it's a race of endurance" Pres Uchtdorf

"You're a nobody.....and if you ever forget it, the Lord will remind you, and it won't be pleasant" E. Anderson quoting pres Packer

"There will be nothing in this world that will defeat us" Pres Monson

"Keeping the commandments is the best assurance in keeping our signal with the Divine" Jose Teixeira

President Monson, Sunday morning session

My favorite from the YW General Broadcast was:

"One of the most frequent questions I am asked is, “How does a mother of five sons and only one daughter qualify to be the Young Women general president?” My reply is always the same: “It’s because I have one perfect daughter, and I know all the boy secrets!” Tonight my sons have given me permission to reveal one of those secrets to you. It is this: virtuous young men are attracted to virtuous young women."

and

We must know and realize that, just as Winston Churchill said in a critical hour during World War II, “to every man [and young woman] there comes . . . that special moment when [they are] figuratively tapped on the shoulder and offered the chance to do a special thing unique to [them]. . . . What a tragedy if that moment finds [them] unprepared or unqualified for [that] which [could have been their] finest hour” (see Jeffrey R. Holland, “Sanctify Yourselves,” Liahona, Jan. 2001, 49; Ensign, Nov. 2000, 40). This is a critical time. You are being tapped on the shoulder. You are preparing now for that work which will be your finest hour. You are preparing for eternity.

Both are from Sis. Dalton.

I was nursing Lil' Man throughout the sessions yesterday and today - no free hands to take notes, but I enjoyed Elder Bednar, President Uchtdorf, and President Packer's son's talk.

One more I just found:

Rafael E. Pino ~ If our lives and our faith are centered on the Savior, Jesus Christ, nothing can ever go permanently wrong. On the other hand, if our lives are not set on the Savior, no other success can ever be permanently right. Living the gospel does not mean that we will escape adversity, it means that we will be prepared to face and endure adversity more confidently.

My notes are sadly very empty due to a MAJOR cussing fit and subsequent running away by our dear "borrowed" child. Let's just say I can't wait for the Ensign. I think I like Jenn's quote from Elder Uctdorf the best so far, though. I did hear that one and really liked it. Discipleship is definitely not a spectator sport.

I didn't look at your blog before the sessions today, and as I was taking notes this morning I heard a few pearls, and I was wishing you were doing the contest again!! So thanks!

I liked these:

Allan Packer: "We must know, and we must know that we know!"

Elder Ballard: "We must walk boldly in the light, not stumbling in the darkness."

Rafael Pino: "The important thing about Christ is not how he died, but how he lived."

Vern said...

"The future is as bright as your faith." - Monson

"Well then, I guess I'm screwed." - Me, after hearing Monson say that

This was such a great conference, but as my Seminary kids reminded me today--I say that at the end of every Conference.

Elder Andersen: "It is not be chance we are who we are"

Elder Stevenson: "As we touch the temple, the temple will touch us."

I loved Elder Pearson's concept of "net faith" as well as his 6 destructive D's.

President Uchtdorf: "The Gospel has the power to fill all emptiness."

Most everyone has already posted the quotes I like the most..but a few others I liked were:

"You don't have to spend time as a Laman or Lemuel to be a Nephi or Jacob."--Elder Ballard

"Living the Gospel does not mean we will escape adversity-only that we will be prepared to bear it well."-Rafael E. Pino

"Reverence is profound respect mingled with love."--Sister Lifferth

I don't have a quote, because I need the adult game to keep me awake. Not because conference is boring - not at all! It's because I spend several days beforehand cleaning cleaning cleaning so we can have bunches of people over for conf. and a potluck in-between. And so I get so exausted, when I sit down, I can't help but go to sleep!

I cannot remember the gentleman's name, and I really do respect his ability to deliver a sermon in a language that isn't his native tongue. That disclaimer being offered. my favorite quote was,

"You have the power to shoes [choose]."

My favorite was by Elder Holland, when he was talking about Christ. Not word for word, but it went something like this:

"Christ had to walk the path alone once (referring to the atonement), are we going to make him do it again by not being responsive?"

It was the kick in the pants I needed.
